Eleanor Dennis is a soprano from Aberdeenshire. She is currently a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Music, under the tutelage of Eiddwen Harrhy. She is this year’s recipient of the Maidment Scholarship, administered by the Musician’s Benevolent Fund, and is also generously supported by the Van der Beugel scholarship, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, and the Josephine Baker Trust. In September, she is to take a place at the RCM Opera School.
Since studying at the RCM, she has worked with such conductors as Bernard Haitink, Sir Charles Mckerras and Martin Andre and in December 2007, she appeared in the chorus of the Benjamin Britten International Opera School’s production of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. In April 2009, she covered the role of Lisaura in their production of Handel’s Alessandro. This year, she starred in her first operatic role, as Amarilli in Handel’s Il Pastor Fido, conducted by Laurence Cummings in conjunction with the London Handel Festival.
She has appeared extensively as an oratorio soloist in some of London’s major concert venues, including King’s Place, St-Martin’s-in-the-Field, St John’s Smith Square and the Royal Opera House, singing works such as Handel’s Messiah, Poulenc’s Gloria, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Magnificat and Handel’s Dixit Dominus.
