Howard Blake The Passion of MaryThe soloists in Blake’s oratorio take on specific dramatic roles: soprano (Mary), tenor (Jesus the man), treble (Jesus as a boy), and bass (Prophet/Satan). Famous for his film music for The Snowman, Blake reveals a more serious side in this substantial choral work evoking various episodes in Jesus’ life from the point of view of Mary, from the Visitation and Nativity through to the Resurrection. The work is in four parts of which the third is a setting of the ‘Stabat Mater’ lament, portraying her feelings at the Crucifixion.
As a counterpart, the concert opens with Bach’s celebrated Magnificat with its stirring and uplifting choruses alternating with more introspective sections for the soloists and, at its centre, ‘Et misericordia’, a quiet but emotionally-charged duet for alto and tenor.
Listen to excerpts from The Passion of Mary, and read more about Howard Blake.

Go on an adventure with the NLO, the orchestra-in-residence. Join Peter as he pursues the hungry wolf in the silent woods where instruments represent animals: the flute is a twittering bird, flying high in the trees; the oboe is a quacking duck, the clarinet a stealthy cat; and three snarling horns represent the wolf. The strings of the orchestra represent Peter who has the most famous tune. Will Peter find the wolf, and what will he do, when he does?
