Special Educational Needs
The New London Orchestra has developed projects which offer people the chance to take part in and create live music. Our experience shows that this process is highly beneficial for people who have special needs. We have worked in a variety of special needs settings, including schools for deaf children and housing projects for people with enduring mental ill health.
Taking part in an activity that relies upon creativity, interaction and awareness of others offers people new ways to communicate and engage with their environment.
Projects in Schools for the Deaf
Following a week-long project in Oak Lodge School for Deaf Children in 2005, the New London Orchestra has received funding to work in Deaf schools for a further 3 years. We have expanded our project to include Blanche Nevile School in Haringey.
We will be collaborating with sound designer and public artist Thor McIntyre-Burnie, who will use sound technology to make music more accessible to children with hearing impairment. Musicians from the Orchestra will demonstrate their instruments and lead exercises about various elements of music, and each school will put on a final performance of work they’ve created.
